Part V: Rules > Creating a Duplicate Search Rule

Duplicate Search Rules

Duplicate search rules check for work items that are the same or similar. For details on how operators perform duplicate searches, see the XTRAC Workbench User’s Guide.

IMPORTANT: For general XTRAC rule information, see XTRAC Rules

You can set up duplicate search rules that execute when certain events occur. You can also set up duplicate search rules that operators with appropriate privileges can use to manually evaluate work items.

XTRAC displays potential duplicate work items in a Link Items window. The operator can then link the current work item to any of the potential duplicates. Linking two work items performs the following actions:

Note: To define a duplicate search rule, you need the Create and Duplicate Search Rule security functions as part of the security group that is associated with your entitlement set.

To create a duplicate search rule

  1. In Feature Explorer, click Rules > Duplicate Search Rules.
  2. In the Duplicate Rule Summary window, from the Node drop-down list box, select the node where you want to define the new rule.

XTRAC lists all of the existing duplicate search rules that are associated with the node.

  1. Click New.
  2. In the Duplicate Search Rule Detail window, in the Description field, type a description for the rule (up to 60 characters).
  3. Select the event you want to use.
  4. Fill in the search criteria, match criteria, and the maximum number of items to return if it applies.

Note: If you create both an After Create rule and a Before Create rule at the same node, the Before Create rule takes priority. The After Create rule does not fire.

  1. (Optional) In the Change Request ID field, type the ID of the change request (up to 30 characters).
  2. (Optional) In the Memo field, type the reason for creating the rule (up to 60 characters).
  3. Click Save.

XTRAC saves the duplicate search rule and appends it to the bottom of the rule list on the Duplicate Search Rule Summary window. When you close and reopen the Duplicate Search Rule Summary window, XTRAC reorders the new rule in alphabetical order by item type.

  1. Specify the node and rule association.

See Using Rules Stored at Another Node.
